PROTESTERS clashed with police in The Hague on Tuesday evening (November 2) as the Dutch government re-imposed measures to slow down the latest spike in COVID-19 infections.

According to local media, 13 people were arrested for insulting and throwing rocks and fireworks at police officers.

Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte announced that the use of a "corona pass," showing proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or recent negative coronavirus test, would be broadened as of Nov. 6 to include public places such as museums, gyms and outdoor terraces.

Face masks will be reintroduced in stores and other public places, while people are advised to work from home for at least half of the time.

COVID infections in the Netherlands have been rising for a month after most social distancing measures were scrapped in late September, and reached their highest level since July in the past week.

The surge has forced many hospitals to cut back on regular care again, to make room for urgent COVID-19 cases.
